Matter and Thread are often mentioned together, but they are not the same thing. Understanding the difference helps you buy products that have a better chance of working together.
Matter is a common application standard
Matter defines a common way for supported smart-home devices to be set up and controlled. It is backed by companies including Apple, Google, Amazon, Samsung and many device manufacturers. Matter can operate over Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Thread, depending on the product.
A Matter device can often be shared with more than one supported ecosystem, a feature called multi-admin. Available functions still depend on the device type, Matter version and the controlling platform.
- Look for the official Matter mark and supported device category.
- Check whether the feature you need is supported by your platform.
- Keep the setup code in a secure place.
Thread is a low-power mesh network
Thread is designed for low-power devices such as sensors, locks and switches. Mains-powered Thread devices can help extend the mesh. A Thread border router connects the Thread network to the rest of the IP network; selected Apple HomePods and Apple TVs, Google Nest devices and other hubs include this function.
Thread does not automatically mean Matter. Some products use Thread with an ecosystem-specific protocol.
- Confirm that you already have or plan to buy a compatible border router.
- Place routers and hubs where they can maintain a stable connection.
- Do not assume every hub supports every brand or function.
A practical buying checklist
First choose the ecosystem used by the people in the home. Then check the product’s exact protocol, hub requirements, remote-access requirements and update policy. Wi-Fi, Zigbee and manufacturer-specific products can still be excellent choices; Matter is not the only route to a reliable smart home.
- Buy for a clear use case, not only for a logo.
- Prefer brands that provide security and firmware updates.
- Test a small group of devices before expanding throughout the property.
Matter helps compatible platforms speak a common language; Thread provides an efficient network for suitable devices. You may need both, one or neither.
