Catch water leaks before they become major damage

Place sensors where water appears first

Small leak sensors use metal contacts or a sensing cable to detect water. They are useful under sinks, near washing machines, water heaters, refrigerators with water lines, pumps and air-conditioning drain areas. A sensor only helps when its alarm or notification reaches someone who can act.

• Place the contacts at the lowest likely collection point.
• Name each sensor clearly in the app.
• Enable phone notifications for every responsible person.

Alerts versus automatic shutoff

A basic sensor sounds an alarm or sends a message. A motorised shutoff valve can close the main supply when a connected sensor or flow-monitoring system detects a problem. Products such as Flo by Moen and Phyn are examples of systems that monitor water flow, although availability, plumbing compatibility and features vary.

Automatic closure can limit damage, but installation should allow safe manual operation and should not interfere with equipment that requires a continuous supply.

• Ask a qualified installer to assess the main valve and pipe size.
• Decide which alerts should close the valve automatically.
• Make sure everyone knows how to reopen or close water manually.

Test the protection you depend on

Batteries, wireless connections and valve mechanisms need periodic testing. Use the manufacturer’s test procedure, verify that notifications arrive and inspect hoses and fittings at the same time. Technology adds warning and control; it does not replace plumbing maintenance.

• Test sensors several times per year and after network changes.
• Replace batteries before extended travel when they are low.
• Inspect washing-machine hoses and visible plumbing for wear.
